Public Consultation on Updating Ireland's Clean Air Strategy

Events

Event poster image
Organiser: Department of Climate, Energy and Environment

Date: February 20, 2026

The air we breathe is fundamental to our health, our environment, and our quality of life. In Ireland, while our air quality generally compares favourably with many of our European neighbours, we still face challenges. These include localised issues in urban areas as well as meeting the stringent health-based targets set by the World Health Organization and our Clean Air Strategy.

The changes that are required will have positive economic and societal co-benefits, including cleaner air, warmer homes, better health and lower carbon emissions, helping Ireland move towards a more sustainable economy for the long term.

The purpose of the Clean Air Strategy as published in 2023 was to set out the priorities and policy framework to ensure continued reductions in air pollution emissions. It established a number of high-level actions to drive delivery of air quality improvements.

Following the completion of our two progress reports the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment is now seeking feedback on the strategy in order to assess the potential for new actions to be included. This public consultation will collect views and recommendations from the public on how the Strategy could potentially be updated so that it remains fit for purpose and to ensure that we can deliver continuous improvements in air quality.

Closes 20th of February 2026
