EJNI writes to Ministers about Ireland’s delayed Social Climate Plan

News

Date: May 8, 2026

Environmental and social justice organisations have written to the Irish Government expressing concern about Ireland’s continued delay in finalising an EU-mandated national Social Climate Plan amidst rising energy price volatility and geopolitical instability.

The letter outlines why timely delivery of the SCP matters not only for Ireland’s access to EU funding from 2026, but also for ensuring that supports are targeted effectively towards households and communities most exposed to rising energy and transport costs.

The absence of a finalised Plan leaves Ireland more reliant on reactive, short-term responses rather than a coordinated, forward-looking strategy focused on resilience, fairness, and structural transition.

This week, Ireland also received a “red card” from REScoop.eu in its EU-wide assessment of Member State progress on Social Climate Plans, reflecting growing concern at European level regarding delays in delivery and stakeholder engagement.

Read letter here to find out more about the implications of a delayed SCP for Ireland.
