A Movies That Matter official selection, Tatiana Scheltema’s Esther & the Law: the case against Shell profiles Esther Kiobel’s dramatic court case against Shell at the Hague. Kiobel accused Shell of complicity in the murder of her husband Dr Barinem Kiobel, one of the “Ogoni Nine” executed by the then-military dictatorship in Nigeria for their opposition to Shell’s activities in the Niger Delta.
Maynooth Library holds the death row letters and poems of Ken Saro-Wiwa, leader of the Ogoni movement and another of the Ogoni Nine, which have been published as Silence Would be Treason (now available as an open-access ebook). The Irish première of the film will take place in Maynooth to mark the 30th anniversary of the executions.
There will be a welcome address by Maynooth University President Eeva Leinonen, followed by the film showing (73 mins). Tea/coffee and light refreshments will be served during the intermission, followed by a Q&A with Esther Kiobel herself, the film-maker Tatiana Scheltema and Mark Dummett, Amnesty International’s specialist on the human rights issues involved around Shell in the Niger Delta.
