What prospect for boosting pollinator numbers in the UK and transitioning towards more sustainable farming methods under a new Labour government?
Emma Hardy MP, the UK government’s Minister for Water and Flooding, has stated that: “Britain is currently one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. This government is committed to protecting bees from toxic neonicotinoid pesticides, while working with our farmers to find new ways to protect crops and support a profitable farming sector.” The Joint Nature Conservation Committee assesses that between 1980 and 2022, the distribution of pollinators in the UK decreased by 24%. The UK has lost 97% of wildflower meadows since the 1930s, with numerous studies showing a widespread decline in pollinator numbers. Pollinators are crucial to the agricultural economy with the economic benefits of pollination to crop production in the UK estimated at £500 million annually.
