Alongside CSOs like Irish Refugee Council, Women’s Aid Ireland, Irish Rural Link & others, EJNI Director Ciara Brennan met with the European Economic and Social Committee to raise awareness of transboundary issues on the island of Ireland and the importance of transparency and civil society participation in the development of National Regional Partnership Plans across the EU.
At the European Commission, Ciara presented a joint set of priorities from Irish Civil Society to the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG-JUST) around the Civil Society Strategy, Democracy Shield and Rule of Law, highlighting goldmining in the Sperrins as an example of the need for better all-island consultative mechanisms.
With Ireland assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July, it is important to foster robust dialogue on the protection of civil society and to ensure this priority is embedded throughout the Presidency and beyond.
