Mountains, North, River, Nature

Our story began when two people in Gleann Fhinne saw a notice in a local paper about a company based in the Netherlands applying for a prospecting licence in the Bluestack Mountains. Four of us got together around a kitchen table and arranged a public meeting in An Coimín. We were amazed at the turnout. It was mobbed. We were lucky in that Raidió na Gaeltachta and TG4 gave us publicity. We had letters of protest at the door for people to sign on the way out and also large signs for landowners to post on their gates and fences, etc. That night, a representative from Love Leitrim and other individual campaigners from around the country gave us some great tips. We took all their advice on board and went out and got hundreds of protest letters signed in the community and began an online petition. The following week we held another meeting in Donegal Town which was also very well attended. We lobbied local politicians and councillors and a few weeks later the application was withdrawn. However, we know they will be back. Donegal is being hit very hard by mining, windmills and oyster farms. We seek to protect our environment.
