The Draft Policy Statement on Geothermal Energy for a Circular Economy follows the publication in November 2020 by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, of An Assessment of Geothermal Energy for District Heating in Ireland and Geothermal Energy in Ireland – A Roadmap for a Policy and Regulatory Framework.

The engagement of the public in finalising this draft policy, before it is proposed to the Government, will help deliver a regulatory regime that is robust, transparent and enhances the environment.

Geothermal energy projects will have to be delivered in full compliance with all environmental protection law, including the public’s rights to information and participation in decision making processes in line with the Aarhus Convention.
