Northern Ireland remains the only part of the UK or Ireland with no climate legislation and therefore has no binding greenhouse gas reduction targets.
FoE have been working with Climate Coalition NI over the past year to advance the case for strong climate legislation in Northern Ireland. With the help of lawyers, academics and environmental charities, we drafted Northern Ireland’s first climate change law in the form of a private members bill which received unprecedented cross party support. In response to this, the NI executive took the unprecedented step and introduced its own rival climate change legislation which falls far below the necessary ambition set by the private members bill.
With Stormont returning on Monday the 13th of September it’s more important than ever that we send a clear message that Northern Ireland needs strong, net-zero climate legislation and nothing less will do.
Please join Friends of the Earth NI outside the Stormont buildings at 12pm to show your support.
Current covid regulations and social distancing shall apply.
