HER Outdoors Week returns once again from 12th – 18th August, and what a week it will be! The week is all about providing more opportunities for ALL females to escape to the outdoors and try something new.
Mountaineering Ireland is delighted to collaborate with Wicklow Sports and Recreation Partnership in delivering this event.
This Mountain Environment Hike will be based in Wicklow, meeting at the Laragh Free carpark.
This event will start at 9.30am and will finish by approximately 3pm.
On this Mountain Environment Hike, you will ascend to the summit of Derrybawn, with views over Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains, and return back down through mountain trails and forest tracks. Throughout the hike, the group will slow down to notice nature around us, stopping to learn about flora, fauna, geology, and conservation efforts. The group will stop to talk about how the mountains in Wicklow formed and how landscapes change over time. There will be discussion on biodiversity, from past, to present and future, and what we can do to protect the fragile environments we walk and hike in.
A moderate level of fitness is required for this hike. The group will move at a comfortable pace, with lots of stops. Distance approx. 10km, elevation gain approx. 450m.
This hike is led by Dr Anthea Lacchia, of Nature Tales & Trails. Anthea is a Mountain Leader with a PhD in geology (https://naturetalesandtrails.ie/).
