Public Consultation Event on Northern Ireland’s Carbon Budgets
Northern Ireland’s 2030 and 2040 Emissions Reduction Targets and First Three Carbon Budgets & Seeking Views on CCC Advice Report
About this Event
Northern Ireland’s first ever consultation on Carbon Budgets has been launched by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). The consultation will run for 16 weeks from 21 June to 11 October 2023.
Northern Ireland is now required by law to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 48% by 2030. DAERA is required to make new regulations which set a maximum total amount of permitted greenhouse gas emissions in Northern Ireland over five-year budgetary periods. These are known as the ‘carbon budget’. The UK government’s independent statutory authority for advising on emissions, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), has provided advice on what those carbon budgets need to be.
The consultation seeks feedback on the proposed first three carbon budgets for 2023-2027, 2028-2032 and 2033-2037, as well as on the targets that should be set for 2030 and 2040 for reductions in greenhouse gases.
DAERA is also seeking views through the consultation on the CCC’s recommended Path to Net Zero for Northern Ireland and is keen to hear from individuals, businesses, communities and other organisations from across Northern Ireland.
This consultation and the conversations that will take place will also be used to help inform the Northern Ireland’s first Climate Action Plan.
If you are unable to attend one of the consultation sessions in person, you can access the consultation document and online survey here https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/consultations/carbonbudget
