Rights of Nature and Heritage on the Island of Ireland
Join us at Ulster University Derry/Londonderry (Magee) campus for an engaging discussion on the emerging rights of nature movement and its connections with cultural heritage throughout Ireland. The 2022 Citizens Assembly on Biodiversity Loss in the Republic of Ireland recommended enshrining rights of nature and the human right to a healthy environment within the Irish constitution. Meanwhile, the UK government has agreed to sign the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. These currents are framed within an international environmental movement that takes as inspiration traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous relations with more-than-human beings.
This symposium connects these threads, foregrounding an ecocentric orientation and considering how Irish cultural heritage enlivens ecosystemic wellbeing. Academics from the fields of law, folklore, anthropology and geography will share insights, as will Irish heritage pracitioners who, through their practices, activate the power of arts and culture as agents of ecological care. The event will end with a World Cafe so that all can attendees can share insights.
