RSPB Northern Ireland Future farms biodiversity and natural capital mapping and interactive dashboard

Natural Capital Solutions led a project that demonstrated the implications for farming and farm businesses in Northern Ireland if there was a move towards subsidising climate and nature-friendly farming with a focus on enhancing ecosystem service benefits. The project explored two future scenarios across four case study farms (across lowland and upland livestock farms and one arable farm) using a natural capital asset and ecosystem service mapping and accounting approach, along with farm business assessment. Habitat opportunity mapping was used across the farms to identify where interventions to restore nature could be placed to connect up existing habitats and enhance biodiversity and a range of ecosystem service benefits. The project produced maps of the farm baselines and across the two different scenarios which were displayed, along with tables and text in an interactive web dashboard that served as a portal but also as a project report.
